The Vying Turtles: Who Claims the Better David?

Michelangelo. Donatello. Now, even if you know nothing about art, these names will sound familiar. You may know them from the famous TV show 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' or a casual mention of them by a friend. Either way, the truth is that these two sculptors are marked as two of the best, if not the best, sculptors of all time.

Across the world, each day, thousands of professors, teachers, and art critics discuss the fantastical works of these two, coming back to the same staggering pieces time and time again. Two such pieces? 'David,' from the famous biblical tale of David and Goliath. Yes, it is true. These unimaginably famous sculptors created a statue of the same person, David, to be displayed prominently throughout the world's museums. However, there are a few critical subtle differences:

Donetello's 'David' - Samuel S. Sanders, The Wave, 2024

In Donatello's 'David,' the hero is portrayed as an almost passive form, with his hip pressed outwards towards the viewer. In his right hand, he clutches a giant sword, reaching from the bone of his hip to his ankles, which are propped up angularly against a mound of something (perhaps armor or dirt?). David's left-hand rests on his hip, almost giving him an air of power or arrogance over the viewer. Lastly, this piece is formed of bronze, whereas the statue created by Michelangelo is somewhat different in material.

Michelangelo's statue of David is an entirely marble statue. Chiseled to perfection, this polished marble was a much more accessible piece for him to mold than a bronze statue, and Michelangelo put this convenience to good use. Whereas the aforementioned David had more of a slim, wiry figure, this piece has much more tone to the muscles and more strength and power in the statue's stance. To support this, clutched in his right hand is a bag containing a rock, the same bag with which David killed Goliath. The arm on the opposite side of his body seems primed for action, with David's face looking towards something to the viewer's right. The pure concentration etched into his stoic face can almost recast the hardships of his life to the viewer, and indeed, the tale his face tells is an evocative one.

Whether you lean towards the yellow Ninja Turtle or the Purple, remember that both of these sculptures are masterpieces in their own right. The debate over which is 'better' or 'more realistic' is subjective. What truly matters is the personal connection you, as the viewer, create with these works of art.
